Yesterday, the House of Representatives approved a measure that would exempt Native American owned businesses that operate on tribal land from the National Labor Relations Act ("NLRA"). The reason Republicans gave for backing the legislation? It would save tribal businesses from burdensome compliance costs and fees.
In the interim, Democrats have cried foul and argued that rescinding the protections afforded under the NLRA would put thousands of workers on the tribal land from having a say in their workplace rights.
